Bateleur Brand Planning

An infographic timeline of generations on a bright yellow background, showing Baby Boomers (1944–1967) on the left, Gen X (1967–1984) in the center, Millennials (1984–2000) to the right, and Generation Z (2000–2011) with colorful blocks and people illustrations.

The Generational Fault Lines

South Africa isn’t one market. It’s four distinct generations, each living a very different reality.

At Bateleur, we surveyed 1 298 South Africans to uncover these Generational Fault Lines. What we found is a country shaped not just by age, but by very different economic and emotional pressures:

  • Financial anxiety: 74% of Gen Z say money is their biggest stress. Among Boomers, that drops to 46%.
  • The happiness gap: Boomers are the most content (3.9 out of 5), while Gen Z sits lowest at 3.5.
  • The grocery squeeze: 80% of Millennials and Gen X feel rising food costs, but for very different reasons tied to their life stage.
  • Healthcare realities: 67% of Boomers are impacted by medical costs, far more than younger generations.

Same country. Same economy. Completely different experiences.

For brands, employers and leaders, this isn’t a nice-to-have insight. It’s essential. What resonates with one generation can easily miss or even alienate another.
