The State of the Nation, As South Africa Sees It
South Africa’s business-active population is sober, sceptical and selectively hopeful.
That is the key finding from the 2026 Bateleur Vantage Point Survey, conducted among 1 240 working South Africans across all provinces, generations and demographic groups.
This white paper explores the country’s mood ahead of the 2026 Local Government Election and what it means for business, consumer confidence and long-term stability.
Six Key Findings
- Economic pessimism dominates: 56% expect the economy to decline, while only 22% expect improvement.
- Corruption is the biggest concern: 83% believe corruption and government mismanagement are holding the economy back.
- Youth disengagement is complex: Respondents point to unemployment, poor education, economic instability, weak mentorship and mental health challenges as key drivers.
- Trust in institutions is uneven: National government ranks lowest on trust, while business and international media score highest.
- The GNU is seen as underperforming, not failing: Half of respondents view the GNU negatively, but complete disillusionment remains limited.
- Performance credit is highly concentrated: The Democratic Alliance receives most credit for GNU delivery, while ministers Leon Schreiber and Pieter Groenewald rank highest on perceived performance.
What This Means for Business
The findings reveal a South Africa that is neither hopeless nor fully optimistic. People recognise deep structural problems, but still see signs of progress and leadership.
