The Mood of South Africa

Last week we asked you in a poll what you think is weighing most heavily on South Africans right now.

51% of you said cost of living pressure, 41% said job security and employment and only 8% said personal safety and security.

You were right. And there’s data to back it up.
In our Vantage Point 2026 study, 70% of South Africans named the economy as their primary source of anxiety. It sat above corruption, violent crime and political instability on the list of what keeps people up at night.

But here’s what makes this more than just an economic story:

Financial pressure at this scale doesn’t just change how people spend. It changes how they feel, what they prioritise, how much patience they have and what they expect from the brands, employers and institutions in their lives.
